Statements on Behalf of the University

UC Santa Cruz’s leaders are stewards of our institutional mission of teaching, research and public service and have a responsibility to create and sustain an environment where free and respectful expression thrives. Increasingly, university leaders are being asked to weigh in on issues related to societal, political and public matters outside of the sphere of the campus’s mission.

As the chancellor of UC Santa Cruz, one of my roles is to create an environment for those who live, work, and learn on our campus to explore important issues and share their informed views. Members of our campus have a variety of thoughts and beliefs, reflecting the diverse backgrounds, identities and perspectives of our students, faculty and staff.  It is important that we work together to protect the open exchange of ideas among those on our campus — something that is foundational to our values and our identity as an academic institution.

Where issues are not directly related to our ability to pursue our mission of teaching, research and service, I and our campus’s leadership will refrain from making official, formal statements on behalf of UC Santa Cruz. Together, we will continue to build an environment that fosters open and respectful exchange of ideas by all members of our campus community.
